Thesis Defence!

Handan Balıkçı defended her thesis successfully on Jan 18th. The study showed that a two-sided strain sensor with different graphene nanoplatelet ink concentrations can be used in a dynamic range and exhibited promising outcomes to be used in wearable devices. A sensor with two high gauge factors, working linear in different strains! Thanks Handan and we would like to express our special thanks to our university’s EEE department, Micro Nano Systems Laboratory, for their extraordinary support within the scope of this study.

Another collaboration with Ankara HBV and Bogazici Universities has come to fruition and the paper titled “Adsorption behavior of serum proteins on anodized titanium is driven by surface nanomorphology” has been published in the journal AVS-BioInterphases. Our study discusses the investigation of protein adsorption behavior on bare and anodized titanium (Ti) samples and focuses on the effect of nanoscale surface topography on the adsorption behavior of human serum albumin, immunoglobulin G and fibrinogen. The study compares the amount adsorbed and the conformational changes of the proteins on surfaces with different nanomorphologies. The results show that the nanomorphology of the surfaces significantly affects the conformation of adsorbed serum proteins, even for surfaces with similar roughness values. The study highlights the influence of nanoscale surface topography on protein adsorption behavior and sheds light on the role of surface properties in defining the in vivo response to materials.

The study titled “The Effects of Heteroatom Doping and Physicochemical Character on Electrochemical Properties of Graphene Sheets”, which includes the results of Zahid’s master’s thesis, has been accepted to be published in the ChemNanoMat journal of Wiley. We would like to thank those who helped us with this publication, especially Dr. Dinçer Gökcen and Micro Nano Systems Laboratory, for their contributions. Well done Zahid!

TUBITAK 1004 – High Technology Platforms Grant

The signing ceremony of the “Next Generation Biomaterials Technologies Research Network for Healthy Life” project, which was entitled to be supported within the scope of “TÜBİTAK 1004 – High Technology Platforms was completed at Teknofest held at Istanbul Atatürk Airport on April 30, 2023.

Our research team will take part in 3 sub-projects of the entire research platform by contributing studies in conductive hydrogels for functional biomimetic materials and nano scaled surface modification of hip prosthesis of new titanium alloys for better osseointegration.

A brand new publication entitled as “Electrostatic Repulsive Features of Free-standing Titanium Dioxide Nanotube-based Membranes in Biofiltration Applications” in collaboration with Dr. Melis Sardan Ekiz from HUNITEK has just been published in ACS Langmuir. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.langmuir.2c03331The work is based on the Bogac’s MSc studies which has been defended in last summer.

Additionally, the work has been featured as the front cover of the related issue!

Zahid successfully defenden his thesis on Dec 26th. Zahid showed that not only the heteroatom doping of graphene, but also sp2 domain size and side group functionalizations have a significant effect on the charge storage capacity of graphene-based electrodes. Thanks!

Eda’s Summer Internship

Eda, who joined our group as an intern in the summer of 2022, successfully completed her 4-week training. We hope she will join our group for academic studies after graduation. If you would like to do an internship or short term work in our group, please contact us.
